Type 3 is manufactured between 1961 and 1973. Later it was renamed to 1600 from 1500. It was made in three different models like Notchback, Fastback, and Squareback with rear -air-cooled engine and rear wheel drive layout. It was based on type 1 Beetle with four-cylinder engine and pontoon style. In 1961 was launched 1500 Notchback with three box style and unique saloon body. Squareback was produced in 1962.
The fastback was produced in 1965 together with 1600 engine. In 1968 Type 3 e became the first automobile with electronic fuel injection from the series, also possessing a three-speed fully automatic transaxle. In 1970 facelift is added to the version. It was with a great look but never outsold the Beetle. It was with 1.5l 1493 cc engine and later on arisen to 1.6l 1584cc. The main difference between Type 3 and Type 1 was the front suspension. On all of the models, the engine was located in the rear trunk. Later on, disc brakes are set.
