Volkswagen produced swimming cars known as VW Type 128 Schwimmwagen, and Type 166 Schwimmwagen used a lot by the Germans, during World War 2. Type 166 is the most produced amphibious vehicle in history. About 14 300 were built during its year of production from 1942 to 1944.
They were produced by components from VW Type 86, with a four-wheel drive, also known as the Kubelwagen, and the Type 87 with four-wheel drive - Kubel, based on the VW Beetle. Erwin Komenda built a platform that will resist and be able to move in the water.
However, the first vehicles failed because they were too large and easy to break, especially in an off-road. The wheelbase was changed from 240 to 200. VW produced them in Wolfsburg and Porsche in Stuttgart. The bodies were created in Berlin by Ambi Budd. From 1941 to 1944 were built approximately 15 584 Type 166 Schwimmwagens, 14 276 of which were produced in Fallersleben and only 1308 by Porsche.
One hundred eighty-nine are known to remain nowadays, thirteen of which have not ever been repaired.
The models also had self-locking differentials on the front and rear axles. They were able to run with 80 kilometers per hour on the road and 9 kilometers per hour in water. It could also run on a reverse in water as it would run on the roadway.
