It has been in production by Volkswagen since 1974 in seven generations under different nameplates, with different bodies. Mk1 and Mk5 were also known as Volkswagen Rabbit in the USA and Canada. Mk1 was also known as Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico.
Mk1 was produced as a front-wheel drive with a front engine as a replacement for the Beetle. It is the best selling model of Volkswagen and is one of the three best-selling models in the world with over thirty million cars produced by 2013.
VW Golf was initially produced as a three-door hatchback and later on as five-door hatchback, station wagon, convertible and notchback sedan. They were offered in various markets as both a standard road car and fast performing cars.
Mk1 GTI was announced as Motor Trend Car of the Year in 1985. VW Golf was announced as the European Car of the Year in 1992, and 2013. It was also published as World Car of the Year in 2009 with VW Golf Mk6, and in 2013 with VW Golf Mk7. Only the VW Golf, Opel Astra, and Renault Clio have been announced as European Car of the Year two times. Mk7 was announced as Motor Trend Car of the Year in 2015.
Electric models were also produced, initially in the 1970s. Some noticeable models are CityStromer Mk3 with AC drive system from Siemens, Golf Variant twinDRIVE with consumption of 2.1liters per 100 kilometers, and the e-Golf- Blue-e-emotion, able to pass 200 kilometers on one charge, and be recharged in about an hour at a DC fast charging station.
