It was the idea of Adolf Hitler, who wanted the population of Germany to have a car they can afford. It becomes the most manufactured car of a single type ever made for the most prolonged period with approximately 21.5 million vehicles produced. The mass production started in 1945 when it is officially named Volkswagen Type 1. In Germany, it was known as Kafer. It was designed to perform about a hundred kilometer per hour. Models with a few differences on the exterior are introduced.
