940 was produced between 1990 and 1995 as a 5-door estate and 4-door saloon. It is one of the last Volvos with rear-wheel drive. Most of the options in 940 were the same as those in 740, such as the same drivetrain choices, dashboard, and others. They were available with four-speed automatic transmission and electric overdrive manual and five-speed manual transmission. Independent rear suspension and front metal sheet were introduced. The engines were 2 and 2.4 lite four-cylinder gasoline engines aspirated naturally or turbocharged. 2.4 liters six-cylinder diesel and turbodiesel from VW were also available. 2 liter 16V was also available in Portugal, Italy, and Belgium. In 1991 940 SE was also introduced on the UK market. In 1993 the badge of the estates changed to Polar WITH B200F or B200FT engines. In North America were offered 940 GLE with DOHC, 940 Turbo and 940 SE turbo.
