They were produced from 1987 to 1996 in the Netherlands. They were offered with fuel injected and carbureted gasoline engines. In 1995, a 2-liter diesel engine was also introduced. It was produced by Volkswagen, while the rest of the engines were taken from Renault. They were offered with also 1.6, 1.7, 1.7 turbo, 1.8, 2, and 1.9 TD engines. The 1.6 and 1.7 were with multipoint injection. The 1.8 liter was with mono point injection. The 2 liters was offered with both of the options. The S40 series replaced Volvo 440 and 460. Volvo 480 remained until 2007 when it was replaced by C30.
