Volvo 260 GL and GLE were first introduced in 1975 in Europe and the following year also in North America. It was with the same exterior design and body as the previous 240 but with a more powerful engine and luxurious interior. For the time it was the most classy model of Volvo, even though it was made based on 140 and 164 with many same features as the roof, trunk, dash, windshields, seats, and doors. Between 1975 and 1979 the models were with 2.7 liters V6 engine with manual and automatic transmission. In 1980 a 2.8 liters B28 engine was launched with 130hp and also a diesel D24. Since 1981 only automatic transmission has been available. They were available as four door-station wagons, four-door sedan, and two-door sedan. The production was much lower than for the 240. 265 DL was the first Volvo estate with a six-cylinder engine. Since 1975 three-speed automatic transmission became available in every model and overdrive became available for all manual models. The V6 B27E engine was also known as Douvrin. It was with cylinder liners, 2644cc and 140bhp. In 1980 the engine was upgraded to 2.8 liters, and in some markets, B28A engine, able to run on lower-octane fuel was also introduced. In North America 260 were available only with three-speed automatic transmission and 130hp. Particular models as 264 TE and 262C were also created.
