The first generation is W116, produced from 1972 to 1980. It is the first to be called S-Class. It was with four-wheel independent suspension and disc brakes. About 473 000 cars were produced. It was offered with three and four-speed automatic transmission and five-speed manual. The second generation was produced from 1980 to 1991, marked as W126. It won a Car of the Year prize of Wheels magazine in 1981. Approximately 818 000 sedans and 74 000 coupes were sold. The third generation was produced from 1991 to 1998, named W140. Around 433 000 were built. The fourth generation was produced from 1998 to 2005, with the name W220. The fifth generation was produced from 2006 to 2013 and was called W221. The sixth generation has been in production since 2014, introducing the W222, A217, and C217.
