It was produced between 1984 and 1995 as a facelifted W124 sedan model. The diesel engines were the more economical option. The models with V8 engine were initially called 500E and 400E and after 1993 - E 500 and E 420. They were offered as Estate, Sedan, Convertible, and Coupe. They had a multi-link axle, front suspension, self-leveling suspension, struts, gas-filled suspension spheres, coil springs, and windscreen wiper. Movable headrests in the back and oxygen sensors were also upgraded. 4-speed manual and 4G-Tronic transmission was available together with five-speed 722.5 automatic and 5-speed manual transmission. They were offered as six-door limousine, two-door coupe, two-door convertible, five-door estate, and four-door saloon with a front engine with front and rear wheel drive. Approximately 2.5 million were manufactured. The main difference between the models introduced E class is the different engines. 2 - 2.3 liters l4, 2.6-3.2 liters l6, 4.2-6 liters V8, 2-3 liters Diesel l6, 2.5-3 liters Turbo Diesel l5 and many other engines were used in the models in the period of eleven years. W124 got an excellent reputation for reliability at the time. In 1995 the model with a diesel engine was ranked number one for safety among the upper-middle-class vehicles.
