The 3 Series has been in production since 1975, and consist of seven generations cars. They are the substitution for the second series. The first generation was only available as a 2-door sedan and later on also as five-door station wagon and hatchback, two doors convertible and coupe, four-door sedan, and three-door hatchback. The 3 Series is the best selling for BMW, contributing to about 30% of the total sales every year.
The first generation was produced from 1975 to 1983, followed by a second in production from 1982 to 1994, a third from 1990 to 2000, the fourth from 1997 to 2006, a fifth from 2004 to 2013, a sixth in production since 2011, and a newly introduced seventh generation in production since 2018. The 3 Series has been listed in top ten best cars of Car and Driver magazine, from 1992 to 2014, the longest of all vehicles. Approximately 10 725 000 have been sold since the year 1995.
