The first generation was produced between 1972 and 1978 as two and four-door sedan. It was with a bodyshell from DKW and engine from Mercedes Benz, with 1.3 and 1.5 liters SOHC inline-four petrol engines from 54 to 84 bhp. They were known as L and GL models. In 1973 was introduced sporty 80 GT with two doors and 1.6liters engine with 99bhp. Audi 80 featured MacPherson strut front suspension and telescopic dampers. It became the European Car of the Year in 1973. In 1976 was added a facelift and 80 GTE was introduced with a fuel-injected 1.6-liter engine and 108 bhp. Avant was also offered in some countries. The Fox had 1.5-liter engine with 55hpand four-speed manual transmission. Approximately 1 104 000 vehicles were produced.
